Steel Drum Program Begun at Central School Middle school students at The Central School attended a steel drum concert on Oct. 3 conducted by Mr. Harvey Price, University of Delaware percussion instructor and steel drum ensemble expert.
In addition to participating as the audience, twenty students were also given the opportunity to learn how to play the steel drums.
Red Clay has forged a partnership with the University of Delaware staff members, Mr. Harvey Price and Dr. Suzanne Burton, and Ms. Deb Hansen, Education Associate for the Delaware Department of Education, to offer steel drum instruction for The Central School students. Red Clay music teacher, Ms. Sue Peo, will be joining with Mr. Harvey Price to provide the weekly instruction to the group. Dr. Jeanne Qvarnstrom who oversees the District Performing Arts program proposed the Steel Drum Program to Mr. Michael Simmonds, The Central School Principal, and Mrs. Irene Hills, Director of Special Services. The Steel Drum Program is intended to provide The Central School students will experiences in the Delaware Music Standards that include: performing on instruments independently and with others in a varied repertoire of music (Standard 2) and reading and notating music (Standard 5). In addition, there is the expectation that the Steel Drum instruction may have a positive impact on students’ school attendance, behavior, and academic achievement. There have been many studies that look at different areas of participation in music programs and the benefits on the brain in other areas of thought related to academics. For example, D. Gullatt found that there are positive links between the arts and student academic gains. Instruction will begin on October 17 and continue through the end of the school year. ``We have great expectations that students will benefit from the program both musically and academically,’’ said Dr. Qvarnstrom. |
